Vertebra?

I apologize for the subpar pictures, they were taken in a hurry at my boyfriends house. We went beach combing along a river "beach" about a mile, as the bird flies from the ICW in South Carolina. His daughter found what appears be a vertebra? I really don't have the slightest inclination.

That is a vertabrae and in pretty decent shape. What size is it?

I called and asked my boyfriend for measurements on the mystery bone. This is was I received lol

I think this is possibly a dolphin vertabrae.

What makes this a nice find is that alot of vertabrae are missing the processes when found. Processes are the bony protrusions coming off of the disc. While some is missing there is still quite a bit intact.

You should tell your Boyfriend's Daughter that this is a really good find, and to make sure to keep and take care of it. I am sure her collection will only get bigger from here on in.

Hi Guys,

 

Just wanted to jump in here because a cetacean or dolphin doesn't usually have that heavy ball and socket type joint.  This looks to be bovid/bison .. a cervical vert perhaps ?  Not sure which one. Lemme pull up an image for comparison.

Edit: Here are a few examples ... someone with better terrestrial mammal chops may be able to nail it down.

This looks like ball and socket configuration. I don't think it's dolphin/ cetacean.  I'm getting a more terrestrial crearure vibe on this.

I guess I was thinking dolphin because of the location of find and size. But now when you mention it the ball rules that out.

Yeah .. heck if I know .. haha.  It's just that we had one pop up on Facebook and I've been staring at bison verts for 2 days.  haha    OCD.

 

Her image is a bit distorted because of the wide field of view ... and blurry.

Wow, thanks everyone! I'm going to try to get out there to take better pictures with my dslr today. Then continue my attempt at identifying the creature in which the bone came from.

All I can say on this is mammal vertebrae, but it looks like you have some much more refined identification for the experts.

Possibly fairly modern bovine? The intactness of it would be unusual for a fossil in a marine enviroment? Just speculating.
