Is this even a fossil?

Hey guys new here.  Bought this item at an antique store and it looks authentic at some points but not at others.

 

The amount of detail makes me think it is too real to be a replica.

Looks to me like someone took a dead bird, and squashed it into clay, cement, ... or plaster of paris, 

I don't think this is an actual fossil.

Wait for some more opinions, though.

 

EDIT: The canvas like texture makes me even more skeptical. 

Can you scratch the back of the plate, and expose fresh matrix?  Is it white, or gray, or reddish yellow? 

Still a neat looking item, though.

I would definately go with ceramic on this one.  Actually looks to be Raku clay.

The clay is folded back with a finger divot.

Multiple finger marks.

I would say this looks like a college art project.

  The intire world is all about money so lots and lots and lots of fakes in the world.  To me, this is a purty good fake, but like others here, the first thing come to my mind was what FossilDude 19 said.  The second thing for me was the texture of the 'matrix'?   Just wasnt right.

Hmm, I don't think was created with the intent to deceive... looks like an art piece to me.
