noooooo! At least it was just the stylus and not the fish!

I can fix the fish for free today. A new stylus is probably somewhere in the neighborhood of $70 and I have to wait for it to arrive.

But but but we’re talking a 4 fish slab! :P

seriously though I’m sorry about the stylus!

Meh, I fix broken fossils all the time. :default_rofl: Is it concerning that broken fossils don't bother me? I recently had a Nanotyrannus tooth self-destruct mid prep and my only thought was "well, that's going to take longer to finish"...

I'm just waiting for Paleo Tools to open and I'll be ordering a new stylus this morning.

:default_rofl: I’d still be curled up in a corner with my thumb in me mouth and the tooth shards cradled in the other hand muttering “ my precious, my precious “ in between sobs...:P

Break and fix enough fossils and you’ll get there. :P

I feel that I would rather have it implode while I’m working on it than on the way back to the owner. Opening a parcel full of shards is horrifying, especially after you just paid someone for prepping them. :o

Ok you got me there! That’s the stuff of nightmares right there!

I’m almost done with the fish plate. It’s a bit harder with only the Aro and abrasive but so far I haven’t ruined any of the fish. :P

I need to wrap this one up pretty soon as I just received 2 contract preps that will take priority over my fish. I’m hoping this will be done this week. There are parts missing on all but the two fish’s in the right but overall it’s a decent plate with good preservation. There’s roughly 5 1/2 fish on it.

This slab is finished. I think it turned out pretty nice but took way too long for a handful of sardines! The fins are stellar. Since I abraided them at a measly 8psi, I was able to keep from blowing them off. For the missing bits on the two middle fish, I simply darkened the matrix with Paraloid. These bits peeled off when we split the slab in the quarry but we couldn’t tell at the time.

That's a tasty plate of fish you've got there, Kris. Well done, of course.

Petrified or fresh? :D

I think you might prefer tartan sauce.

  • 1 month later...

Started working on this big Diplo. It had some cracking issues in shipment but was nothing a bit of glue couldn’t resolve since the shipper packed it very well.

Here’s what it looked like at the beginning.

About 3 hours later and I knew this was going to be challenging. There’s a lot of bones that disarticulated.

This shot is after approximately 6 hours of scribe work. The caudal fin is decent but the rest of the fins are really decomposed. Multiple ribs have floated but the skull isn’t too bad. It looks kind of like a retired boxer’s face.

Spent some more time on the Diplo this evening and then switched over to this GRF Bottom Cap plate. This thing has 2 complete and 1 partial Knightia and a nice Diplomystus. The Bottom Cap is immediately below the 18” layer and is about 50x harder. This still needs to be trimmed down to a manageable size but otherwise is done. There’s a surface crack caused by drying that I am considering dropping some glue in just to be safe as well.

I prepped a beautiful Cockerelites liops last night and this morning.

The separation seen on the anal and 2nd dorsal fin rays is natural, not prepped through. This took 5 hours under the microscope with the Micro Jack and abrasive. 100% natural with a bit of Paraloid to lock down the bones.
