Tim (Fossildude19) and I got together Monday the 1st for the third time this year to head up to Central New York, an over three and a half hour trip from Southeastern New York where I live. The weather was bright, sunny, and warm in sharp contrast with our last trip there in early May for the TFF gathering when it was cold and raining. Instead of going straight to Deep Springs Road Quarry, both our favorite collecting site, we decided to stop first at Briggs Road Quarry, a somewhat smaller quarry with a slightly older Middle Devonian marine fauna- the Upper Ludlowville Formation. Some excellent fossils have been found there recently and Tim and I decided we would try our luck. As typical of my experiences there we found a large number of partial Eldredgeops trilobites. I believe Tim found one complete roller. I brought this one piece back with a few partials. However, my best find there was this phyllocarid; Echinocaris punctata, the first phyllocarid I ever found at Briggs Road.

Lovely phyllocarid!    I'm envious!  Stopping in at DSR has become a regular thing on my trips between Ontario and Georgia, but I have yet to score an Echinocaris, let alone one that nice.  One of these days it'll happen.

After a couple of hours, we continued on to Deep Springs Road Quarry about ten minutes away. DSR is the easternmost exposure of the Windom Shale of the Moscow Formation, the same formation that is exposed near Buffalo at Penn Dixie. The fauna here, however, is very different. I lucked out. A few minutes after I started digging I unearthed my first complete Greenops trilobite, a roller. I hadn't found any complete ones in my two previous trips there this year. A few minutes after that I found another even better (mostly prone)one less than a foot away on the same bedding plane. A bit later I took a break to relieve myself in the bushes and as I returned I spotted a rock with a crack in it. I picked it up and threw it down. It split exposing yet another complete Greenops. A while later digging in a different spot I found another complete roller. The most complete trilobites I ever found in a day at DSR was two so this was a record for me. Now for me DSR isn't just about the trilobites. I found a Palaeozygopleura gastropod preserved in pyrite. Tim found, what for me was probably the best and rarest find of the day, a Paleoneilo emerginata, a common bivalve at DSR, but with both valves, the first time I had ever encountered that. He was extremely generous and gifted this unique specimen to me. Thank you Tim. So it was an excellent day- great weather, wonderful company, and some really good finds. No complaints.

You know it's not normal to get this excited by a clam, don't you Jeff?  ;)   This is why I'm so grateful to have found TFF and friends like you and Tim. I'm glad you had an enjoyable and successful expotition.

Start the day with a smile and get it over with.

That phyllocarid is just like the one I got from DSR in May!! Wow. What an amazing find Jeff!! Stunning

Funny thing is I went to Briggs and DSR on a super short 3 hour hunt on Sunday the 30th haha. I was also at penn Dixie and ran into James the day before on Saturday. I did 90 minutes at each spot on sunday. found a really really quality greenops from Briggs rd. I was going to do a very short post showing the best few finds from the weekend. just hard to find time lol.

Those greenops are really nice as well!! 3 in one day! My best is only 2. What an amazing day!

How wonderful Jeff. Looks like we'll  have to hit those spots with you so keep us in mind.

Am also going to try that technique of going into the bushes and emerge to find stuff, on my next outing here.  Gordon

Thanks Don. I already have a number of specimens of phyllocarids I collected back in 2014-2015 at DSR. I haven't found any recently until now so I'm pretty stoked. What have you been finding at DSR?

Hi Gordon. Thanks for the positive commentary. You definitely have to check out DSR someday. Also try picking up a rock and throwing it down to break it. That technique has worked well for me on my last two trips.

Tis raining trilobites over there! Nice finds!

You had quite the day, thanks for sharing.

Thanks Tony. This made up for the past two trips I was skunked on trilobites though I did find other interesting stuff. Still looking to collect some Triassic ammonites this fall in Nevada.

My Middle Devonian and Cretaceous bivalves are certainly one of the highlights of my collection. Glad to see there are at least a few others who are into that.

Lots of nice bivalves and brachiopods, a few gastropods, hyolithids and some straight-shelled nautiloids, a complete Greenops and an Eldredgeops lacking the pygidium, and one rhinocarid phyllocarid.  I've only been able to stop by a couple of times and only for an hour or two as I am always behind schedule to be in Ottawa or else it's late in the day and I'm dealing with fading daylight.  One of these days I'll have to time things to meet up with Forum folks for a more extended stay.
