Phacops from Morroco?

Hi there folks,

So, I bought this trilobite from a Morrocan seller and I would like to know the species if possible.

It came tagged as Phacops redops, but I couldn't find much information on this species. Is it correct?

Found in Atchana Issimour, Morroco.

I'm not an expert on trilobites, but I know that "Reedops" is a species of Phacopid trilobite, so there migth be some confusion there from the seller.

growing old is mandatory but growing up is optional.

Yeah, I believe it's a mistake.
Would this be Eldredgeops rana?
Is the genus Phacops still valid?

We have some members who are very good with trilobite IDs [@piranha] but we would need to see a very clear photo of the eye showing the arrangement of the facets.

The genus Phacops has been split up, not replaced.  Some North American species have been assigned to the new genus Eldredgeops, but other species remain in Phacops.  Several other genera have been described for Moroccan trilobites.  The phacopids were a very conservative lineage, meaning changes from species to species were subtle so the general appearance was quite similar.  The arrangement of eye facets is one area where differences between species is relatively easily observed.

I see. I'll try to take a better picture tomorrow, but I don't think the eyes are that well preserved...

Hope these are good enough to get a clue on the genus at least.

Any ideas, guys??  :D

It's the weekend. Many of the members are out collecting or whatever. Give them a bit of time.

Mark.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!

I would label it Morocops sp.  There are a couple of species that have 5-6 lenses per vertical lens file.

Species determination is difficult without seeing the ornamentation of the tubercles on the glabella.

Thank you very much!
Genus is good enough for me. =)
So it's definitely not Phacops or Redops, right?
Thank you again!
