A bunch of Morrocan trilobites

Recommended Posts

JulianoLPD

Hi there, guys.
So, I recently bought a lot of trilobites from a Morrocan seller. I asked here in the forum for an ID and it turned out one of the trilobites came with wrong determination, so I'm adding pictures of the other specimens hoping you guys can help me get to genus at least.
They were all sold as Phacops, but of course, the seller does not have knowledge enough to ID them, and neither do I (probably, even less, actually...).
I'll add the pictures below for each specimen. First two pieces I believe it's Flexicalymene sp.
Thanks in advance,
Juliano

By the way, @Kane, do you believe this other one is Morocops? How can I distiguish it from Reedops?

I generally associate Reedops with a more inflated, longer glabella.

As mentioned previously in your other thread, the attached lens count diagrams clearly illustrate that it is not Reedops

Thank you, @piranha!
Don't think I was doubting your ID. Just wanted to understand the difference between the two genera.
The picture you attached is really informative! I'll take a look at this paper, I was looking for something like that!
Thank you a lot.

There are plenty of other venues for people to follow blindly without a hint of intellectual curiosity ... a healthy amount of doubt and skepticism are essential for good science!

So, guys. Let me know if I got this right now.
Would these little dudes be a Reedops, a Morocops and a Gerastos?
:D

You only show one eye.  If you check both eyes, are there 8 lenses in any of the vertical lens files?

The other eye is very poorly preserved. The most I could count is 7 lenses in one or two rows per eye only...

To view the ratio of the eye size to the cephalon, please post a photo that shows this exact angle:

According to McKellar & Chatterton 2009, Reedops pembertoni has similar diagnostic features:

"Visual surface bears 18 rows of lenses, with 7 (rarely 8) as maximum number of lenses per row, and 94–100 as typical total number of lenses per eye (see Text-fig.
10 for lens formula)."

"Sculpture on glabella consists of very fine domed tubercles, bordering upon granule size. Distribution is sparse and widespread across dorsal surface, with progressive
increase in density, crowding, prominence, and size range in anterior region..."

Thank you a lot, @piranha!!
That seems perfectly right. :D
(Can't say I'm not a bit disapointed it isn't Morocops though...)
