Fossils in Wren's Nest

Hi.  I visited Wren's Nest, Dudley, UK last summer.  Just wonder if the fossils shown in the photos were corals or sponges.   They were not uncommon but both were possibly damaged by diggers who attempted to excavate them.  My apology the subject was a bit out of focus.

Thanks.

We need some idea of the size.  There are some colonial corals that could look like that.

I thought digging was not allowed, only picking up loose fossils, of which there are a lot.

As @Rockwood says, the second one and probably the first are favositids, likely to be actually Favosites sp.

Context leads you so far out on that limb ? :)

I think so - knowing the coral fauna there quite well and it's usually the commonest! The photo's not really clear enough for the first one though :)

Cruel. Funny, but cruel. :heartylaugh:

Mark.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!

Just saw cracks in the foundation. Someone has to keep these 'beginners' in line. ;)
