Ramanessin Brook Finds

Recommended Posts

Went fossiling in Ramanessin Brook (Howell, NJ) on 7/9/19. Various finds. Some have already been identified (such as crow shark, mosasaur tooth fragment, sawfish, turtle plastern, ammonite, etc.), but was wondering if anyone saw some additional finds that could be identified. Thank you!

Welcome to the Forum. :)

Individual, well lit pictures of the items you would like identified would be best. Be sure to include a tape measure or ruler for scale.

Make sure to take pictures looking straight down on the item. All sides, top, bottom, front, back, left side, right side for bones.

Front and back, (Labial and Lingual) on shark teeth.

I think you're right with most of these IDs- Squalicorax, Scapanorhynchus and maybe another species like Archaeolamna or Cretolamna. Looks like there might be a partial Ishcyrhiza (sawfish) rhostral spine in the middle and maybe the second from the top right. Maybe an enchodus tooth 3rd from bottom right, and with the lighting I can't tell if the two fossils 2nd and 3rd from the bottom left are just worn shark tooth roots or enchodus jaw fragments. Congrats on the Ammonite piece, I haven't found one in 4 trips to NJ.

The bone is probably modern (sheep, deer, or other). Bottom two fossils look geologic (non fossil). I think you're right with the Mosasaur tooth frag ID and the fossil in the top middle middle looks like a cephalic clasper from a hybodontiform shark, to the bottom left of it looks like a piece of Ischyodus (ratfish/chimaera) mouth plate fragment. The long one on the right looks like it may be geologic or a burrow infilling.

Most of these look like brachiopod or bivalve impressions and the bottom right looks like a section of crustacean claw or body.

Probably right with the mosasaur tooth fragment ID.

There are some of the common shark teeth in there that were mentioned above plus some Enchodus and sawfish material. The ammonite is Placenticeras minor.

The large bone is modern. The smallest thing is a fossil, can’t see it clearly but likely a ghost shrimp claw. The thing to the southwest of the possible claw is a bone frag. The thing to the northwest is an Ischyodus mouth plate frag. The thing to the southeast is likely a Devonian coral. The rest are concretions.

Large thing=rock. The lower right thing is part of a ghost shrimp claw. The rest are bivalve pieces, I can see some Neithea/Pecten, Inoceramus, and Trigonia. Upper right is a concretion.

That’s the Devonian coral.                    That’s the Ischyodus mouth plate frag.
