Mostly by size.

From iron in the tooth during life, as opposed to staining.

To small for groundhog, they are bigger than muskrat.

Also, the habitat of muskrat leaves them more likely to be found in a river.

 

Not the bright orange of a gopher, but looks yellowish to Me.

 

But I could be wrong, having never seen a groundhog's teeth.

I have seen a muskrat femur come out of Big Brook. Color is a poor indicator in this brook as bog iron can be seen forming. Something only a few years old can get stained.

Those are both the third claw segment from the ghost shrimp, Mesostylus mortoni.
