Note to Texas/OK members!::::

Does anyone know how to get a trip scheduled to the TXI and Ashgrove quarries in Midlothian?

DPS did one this past spring I think and some Forum members posted pix.

I'd like to schedule on for early spring - before spring break a couple of weeks.

Please let me know if you can help!!!

Thanks - Owen

Yes please help!

I live like 20 mins from them, and if I need to go down there and set something up, I can.

I would love to get into this quarry!

I heard they are really jumpy about liability there. Might be tough to get in without one of the clubs they recognize and already deal with.

The Paleontological Society of Austin has also been trying to get back in there. Apparently they only allow a few trips each year(?) I'll let everyone know when we(PSoA) go back there. Generally our field trips are open to all who want to tag along.

some places which shall remain nameless will not allow young people in, so i won't go those places. if side-kick can't hang, then t-dog don't hang.

I seriously doubt they'd let anybody but an established gem & mineral group or a paleontological group in. Your best bet would be to join those other groups.

Last time I went was with the Clear Lake club and we all signed liability forms at both locations. One required that we also wear hardhats and steel toed boots.

As for "being a club" I think the Forum counts to a certain degree however since most of the actual clubs carry liability insurance and we don't that could be an issue.

Also, as per Tracer, I think there are typically limitations about bringing kids in.

Again, if anyone knows for sure please let us know.

Thanks

Owen

I think we could call ourselves the North Texas Fossil and Mineral club.

Do they have a spoil pile area where we could get easier access?

Maybe they are highering :D

Good idea but there is like 3 or 4 people here that don't live in Texas maybe 5

Galveston Island 32 miles long 2 miles wide 134 bars 23 liquor stores any questions?

I've only gone once. Regarding kids, you can fill up a couple of 5 gallon buckets with the KEF / KAU contact material and take it back for the young ones to dig through. For awhile I found my "own" rock pile with this contact layer but that no longer exists.

I have been hearing that Ashgrove has had all it's employees laid for for an indeterminate time, and that TXI will be laying off everyone from Nov to Jan. It might be hard to get a trip in until early next year.

Heck, if they are laying them off, then the quarry will be quiet, and maybe more possibility to get in??

who knows. I have a few contacts I am going to call this week.

They would need someone there with time to keep an eye on us in the quarry.

Probably just going to be a fire watch posted, but it doesn't hurt to try.

Last time we had an escort into the right area at both sites, but then they left us in peace for a few hours. I'm sure they'll still have security and equipment maintenance folks on site to keep things in working order so it might not be too hard. Especially if we offer to buy someone a nice BBQ lunch!!!tongue.gif
