I_gotta_rock
Went out to the Badlands last week for some fossil hunting. Little bits of turtle shell are a common sight and the folks with me were in turtle fragment city, but this find was a little unusual. Take a look at what is turning into a whole tortoise plastron! 8 I refuse to give up my childish wonder at the world.

I was so disappointed that we ran out of time. I was particularly looking forward to learning how to do plaster jackets, though I still wouldn't have gotten to see how to get it back out of the jacket. This was much more of a learning trip for me than an acquisition trip. Walter kept asking me if I was sure I wanted to keep digging the shell out instead of finding another spot where I might find something I can take home, but I persisted on the shell. I did bring home some sweet little goodies, though, including a nanotyrannus tooth! I refuse to give up my childish wonder at the world.

Petrified wood and the hill it came from Metasequoia, or at least that's what I was told. Leaf impression Dino bone, tumbled in the stream and beaten by the sun, I was actually allowed to keep this because it was unidentifiable and eroded out of context. My take-home prize for the week: Nanotyrannus tooth! that's a one-inch wide paintbrush, but I didn't need it to find the tooth. This gem was just sitting there, gleaming on top of the sand, where I was going for a walk. Triceratops "spitter" teeth. Just learned while we were out there that dinosaurs constantly shed their teeth in the same manner as sharks. When they were too worn, the root dissolved and they spit the teeth out. Triceratops teeth are so common there that even the freshly-grown teeth can go home. These are the two best of six or eight we found. One of two Thescelosaurus rib bones we found within a few inches of each other (but a different spot from the turtle shell). The location was mapped. There may be more. These two are museum-bound. 1 I refuse to give up my childish wonder at the world.
