This is the smallest fossil bone I’ve ever found.  I won’t even take a guess on this one. Found in north central Nebraska sandhills.

It's only been up for a couple of days, and not all our members are logged in on a regular basis. Don't fret... There are a number of ID requests that could use some attention. :D I'm not sure how others navigate the forum, but to offset recency effect, I set my feed to all unread content (not just newest thread) so I never miss anything, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. :P

But let me tag one of our members whose expertise in bones is unparalleled here: @Harry Pristis

I struggle to identify bone and fragements etc, but I am trying to learn! :) I am currently an Anthropology undergrad so I'll take my best shot! First, I don't believe it is human. It looks as if it is a ball/socket joint - so that narrows it down. The small bump on the rounded end reminds me of a "lesser or greater trochanter" where the tendons would attach so possibly a femur (long bone of the leg). Is it mineralized and heavy? I can't tell from the picture if it is fossilized or not.

If not, there are big horn sheep, foxes, coyotes and other mammals in the area that would have a short and stout femur like that. I would google "Univ. Of Nebraska prehistoric Mammals/fosssils of the Sandhills" - lots of info from the Univ. Hope that helps! Let us all know what you find!:)
