We found this on a beach in Nova Scotia on the Northumberland Strait. It is totally stone like but looks very much like a bone of a large animal.

Kids are so interested in what can it be?

thanks and regards from Nova Scotia

I am not an expert by ANY stretch on identifying bones. With that said, I don't believe it is a bone. I think it is a very shapely rock. Now, I will leave the final word to the experts:).

I'll concur that I too do not see bone texture in this item. It is a beautifully odd rock with quite a novel shape. I also would likely have been drawn to it if I'd seen it out in the field. The texture more resembles some form of sedimentary rock (not familiar with the types of rocks exposed in the area where it was found). I'm afraid this is Mother Nature having fun with us again--planting wildly shaped rocks out on the beaches to see if we are truly paying attention.

Welcome to the forum. If you have interest in fossils, there is a lot of information archived in this forum. You can do searches here to see if fossil material has been found in your area. Fossil hunting is a wonderfully addictive hobby--hope your curiosity and interest in fossils leads to some interesting finds in the future.

Cheers.

Mother nature never ceases to amaze me with the look alike rocks she produces.  :)

I think maybe a weathered/eroded/water worn basalt cobble.

Yeah, I would have picked that up and kept it too. It's a nice, strangely shaped rock, but only a rock.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!
