My 2nd trip to Volga fossil site

Hi all,

Last week I had theopportunity to visit the place once again (first described here). Unfortunately the trip went way worse than I expected.

I knew the water was high, but was not prepared enough. I thought with high water I could still access small beaches and concentrate on small stuff - not necessarily big bones and verts,  but maybe teeth, echinoids, crustacean fragments etc. I hoped having seen the pictures from the forum I woudn't miss interesting material.

Having arrived to the coast I immediately saw the passage was blocked by fallen and washed ashore trees. I surely tried to move along but didn't make it far due to numerous trees, slippery clay and algal bloom.

The bloom depended on the time of the day and weather: usually the algae dissipated by the end of the day, but before they altered the color of the rocks and made difficult to see anything valuable. The water turned green near the shore.

I do like the ammonites, but that algae is nasty!  Is there a lot of agricultural runoff into the lake?  Usually that kind of algal bloom means there is a lot of phosphate coming into the system.  The flies are probably feeding (as larvae) on the decaying algae.

Nice finds -- felt soles for your shoes won't slip on slimy surfaces. What are the light-colored cylindrical objects? I didn't see any in the photos of what you collected.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!

I think I like the bivalves the most - they've been preserved in a very interesting way :dinothumb:

A lot of cool finds, but man that algae and all those flies look like more than an annoyance! The things we do for fossils. ;)
