Carl
I stand by Cliona. I've seen scads of Cliona in all manner of preservation from the NJ brooks for over 3 decades and this is pretty consistent, including the color and shine. And I know the photo below isn't the best at all but it shows a similar feature. In the first posted picture you can see that several of the pits have a perforation in the center. The attached photo here shows a Cliona stenkern still attached to the steinkern of its host and the white dots represent the perforations. And you can see that behind each white dot is the material that filled in what would be the pits in the first posted photo.
Rockwood
Carl has managed to show it from the sponges point of view, at least in my eyes. Front door, windows, side rooms for the kids maybe. Count me in the sponge camp.
JohnJ
@njenthusiast You might clean it a bit with a toothbrush and water. Then, toss it in a little vinegar. A shell fragment will consistently fizz. The human mind has the ability to believe anything is true. - JJ

Hahaha I knew someone would say something of the sort “You must take your opponent into a deep dark forest where 2+2=5, and the path leading out is only wide enough for one.” ― Mikhail Tal
