PaleoNoel
Hi everyone, this will be the first of several ID requests this week as I'm getting around to sorting through and packing away my fossils from my trip out west and there are plenty of oddities. However, the first piece I'll post does not come from the dry American west, rather from the bottom of the North Sea in the Brown Banks area. I got this "coelodonta toe bone" yesterday at the East Coast Gem, Mineral and Fossil Show and wanted to make sure it was a correct identification and not something like bison, aurochs or horse. It's just under 3 inches long and over an inch wide.

Harry Pristis
Look at other bovids . . . like auroch. My illustration was an American bovid toe in rough condition, the best I have. http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
LordTrilobite
Definitely not rhino. I agree with Harry Pristis that it looks like bovid. Olof Moleman AKA Lord Trilobite

Well it's a good thing I got it for only $8. Any idea of what it might be? Pleistocene North Sea seems to be one of your strong suits.
LordTrilobite
I focus mostly on rhino. But with a toe like this I think it can only be either bovid or cervid. Olof Moleman AKA Lord Trilobite

Thanks, I looked at some bison toe bones online and that was the most similar. I couldn't find any clear images of cerivd (Megaloceros) digits.
