Bone? Or raw jet?

The Neanderoll

Recommended Posts

Hello again!

Can any of you lovely people help me with this one?

Could be a chunk of raw jet, but hoping it's a pliestocene bone.

This was collected on a beach in the North East of England. I know there are large deposits of pliestocene stuff just out to sea.

But there are also large deposits of raw Jet too! Whitby is about 70 miles North and is famed for the stuff.

Can you eagle eyed lovelies help me? Also - what should I look for in future? This is super interesting! :zzzzscratchchin:

Thank you

This is not jet. Jet has no pores, and it has a chonchoidal fracture.

First pic shows small pieces of water-worn jet, chonchoidal fracture is still visible in some of them.

Freshly broken jet. Note chonchoidal fracture and lack of pores.

I am also not sure if your specimen is a piece of bone. Could it also be a piece of slag or even coke?
