Is this the smallest Scottish fish fossil ever?

I went fossil hunting at Tillywhandland quarry this evening in the search for more Acanthodian fossils. I split dozens of stones finding nothing until I came across what must be the smallest mesacanthus mitchelli that has ever been found. It is so small it could have fit onto a 5p coin.

For anyone who has never been to Tillywhandland quarry, it is quarry located on Turin hill near Forfar, Scotland. It famous for producing early Devonian fish and eurypterid fossils. The rocks there formed at bottom of volcanic lake about 405-410 million years ago.

I don't know if it is the smallest, but it is one of the coolest I've seen. :)

Thanks for posting this.

Very cool! II have been spending my summer trying to buy a house and looking for late Devonian fossil fish/tetrapods in Pennsylvania. This is a site in north-central PA, Muncy Valley. I found this pocket of large but poorly preserved gyracanthid spines and scapulocoracoid elements. I'll be posting a report soon.

Great finds, Paul!

Any Devonian fish you can find are cool, poorly preserved or not. ;)
