Looking for a Fossil Preparator to Remove Matrix from a Chilean Meg.

I am looking for references for a professional preparator to take the matrix off the back of my newly purchased Megalodon Tooth from Chile. I have been told the matrix is like concrete and need to find someone with lots of experience.

Explosives usually work to remove things.

Nice tooth @meg.cu

There are many talented preppers on this forum who I would not hesitate to trust this tooth with if it was mine.

I too would recommend @Ptychodus04 and @RJB sine they prep a diverse range of specimens including bone in very hard matrix.

I remember being impressed by @Ptychodus04's work on Pleistocene bones in concrete like matrix a while back.

It will be interesting to see how the rock flakes away from the enamel, ie the "stikiness"

Look forward to seeing it prepped!

Yep, Ptychodus is the man for the job.  I dont have enough time for my own projects let alone someone elses.

Since he’s right around the corner from @Malcolmt I pointed him in his direction.

Ron, Feel free do bring me all your extras. :P I started playing around with the crabs I got from you. Man, they are more work than one would think! My hat’s off to you even more than before for the gems you’ve pulled out of those little gray stones.

Thanks everyone for the referrals. I have spoken with a couple of the preppers mentioned above, and Malcolmt lives 45 minutes away from my house. I hope to meet up next week to have him look at the tooth.

Actually Kris doesn't need tools for this job. He only has to smear a little bit of his heart stopping Ghost Pepper salsa on it and the matrix just melts right off.

A quick rinse and it's done! :P

  • 1 month later...

Just wanted to give a big thanks to  @Malcolmt for doing an amazing job removing the very sticky matrix off the  front of my Megalodon Tooth. Malcolm is a true professional and was a pleasure to work with.

Here are the after pictures.
