Don’t make me regret this...

My best guess is turtle shell. The top layer of this specimen seems to be keratin... but beyond that I’m clueless. All layers are very crumbly. Specimen has no redeeming aesthetic value, beyond being mysterious and... weird. 

 

Found in a spoil pile near Aurora, NC.

I don't see the thickness or texture you normally see on Turtle shell pieces. 

I'm with Dale, ... I think it may be a geological oddity.

Oooo, don't let @Randyw know you are throwing anything away. You know how upset he gets! 

He might start a home for unwanted geological crusty stuff. ;)
