Frank Eaton
My best guess is turtle shell. The top layer of this specimen seems to be keratin... but beyond that I’m clueless. All layers are very crumbly. Specimen has no redeeming aesthetic value, beyond being mysterious and... weird. Found in a spoil pile near Aurora, NC. Rockwood
Sorry. Looks like a geological oddity to me.
Fossildude19
I don't see the thickness or texture you normally see on Turtle shell pieces. I'm with Dale, ... I think it may be a geological oddity. 1 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." Al Dente
It is most likely a phosphatic crust on a rock.
Frank Eaton
I’m going to take “phosphatic crust” as my answer and chunk this one in the garbage. Thanks @Al Dente

It would be of more use on your garden. Should be good fertilizer.

Oooo, don't let @Randyw know you are throwing anything away. You know how upset he gets! He might start a home for unwanted geological crusty stuff.
