What's this crazy thing!?

The Neanderoll

Recommended Posts

Hello all! :)

So I found this oddball in an ice age clay cliff-face yesterday.

When I was cleaning it tonight I noticed some unusual radiating lines coming from one corner on each of this cube-thing's long edges.

I Took some quick snaps while wet and I'll post some dry ones in a mo!

What weirdy beardy thingy is this? Thank you, all knowing Fossil Forum!

I'm thinking it's petrified wood.  The "beard" is the wood grain.  You can see the rings going through the grains.

This side actually looks like shell material, to me.  :headscratch:

Sure looks like petrified wood I have seen from the UK. Where is this from?

Being in an ice age cliff could mean that this has been transported by ice from where the actual fossil deposits are.

The fact that you have the same pattern on both of the long edges is telling. You are looking at a cross section on those ends. In the wet samples you can also see internal wood structure and rings which are made up of early growth wood (lighter) and late wood (darker).

Hornsea in East Yorkshire  :D

It certainly sounds like I have petrified wood.

Thank you @Doctor Mud
