Hot off the press is a very exciting announcement of another spectacular trilobite named in my honor.  The Amazing Jonathan Adrain has bestowed trilobite immortality on yours truly with Tesselacauda morrisoni.  The etymology of Tesselacauda is Latin for "mosaic tail".  In the past there were a couple year intervals in between these joyous occasions.  As luck would have it, this time it happened within a couple months of the last one.  A timeless trilobite treasure that I will cherish forever.  I'm delighted to share it with everyone on TFF!

Congratulations Scott! :yay-smiley-1:  It's great to see your contributions to trilobitology being recognized like this.

I imagine this might be presumptuous of me, but would it be possible for you to offer a short "bio" about how you came to be so active in the field?

Soon after I began collecting I discovered the great importance of the literature, in particular the citations.  The obsession with citations is an unusual affliction, but there is a meditative tranquility in the process, luckily my brain is just wired that way.  For many years I have been amassing hundreds of thousands of pages of literature, usually via interlibrary loan and often from overseas libraries for many of the obscure international journals.  Fortunately the scanning and document production is another source of enjoyable fulfillment for me.  A big chunk of the data is available on TFF as a list of trilobite publications in chronological order, by year of publication.  It continues to be a work in progress as each week I have been adding another year of citations.  Hopefully within the next year it should be complete all the way back to Trilobita Walch 1771.  This week while adding the next year, I was excited to find a few citations I was not previously aware of, it seems there are always some hidden gems as the work is never really done ... so I just call it job security!  I'm very privileged to be involved with so many amazing trilobite specialists around the world.  These tireless workers are my heroes, as well as the great pantheon of trilobitologists of yesteryear.  It is almost surreal to receive this reward and recognition multiple times, and as a result the motivation for my ongoing efforts are increased exponentially.  Kudos also go to a couple of my close anonymous collaborators, their continued support behind the scenes is absolutely an essential part of the project.  The satisfaction of creating something with real intrinsic value for future generations of trilobite workers is priceless.

On any given day you will find me pushing the boulder up the hill ... and there are always some other days when the boulder gets its revenge! indyjone-smiley.gif?1292867625:o:P

For many years I have been amassing hundreds of thousands of pages of literature...

Over the years I have seen numerous systematics/taxonomy grad students (Entomology in this case, but it's no different for other disciplines) spend years accumulating the literature they need to complete their research.  I cannot state emphatically enough what a boon it is to have this legwork done in advance, so all the relevant papers are accessible in one place.  This can shave a huge amount of time off of a project.  Also to be honest most people find the task of chasing down obscure/old papers tedious and/or frustrating in the extreme, so having it done by someone who enjoys the challenge is a real boon.  Lastly, for those who haven't the experience of working in taxonomy, the task of assembling the literature is not just a formality, it is critical to the work.  Overlooking a paper can be disastrous.  Taxonomy is based on priority: the first validly published name for a species (or other taxon) takes priority over any subsequently published names, which are considered to be junior synonyms.  Such junior synonyms are relegated to the trash bin, discarded and forbidden to be used ever again.  Imagine the poor researcher who overlooks a paper and subsequently discovers that all of their "new" species had already been named, and their years of work must be discarded.

No wonder piranha is held in such esteem!
