Concretion associated with limestone

Recommended Posts

Hi, I found this concretion near a Bloomington construction site associated with a pile of limestone rip-rap. It was already broken and I didn't find any other pieces in the area. It looks like it might contain a fossil. What do others think and how should I proceed with it?

I believe this is a chert infill in a limestone pocket.  I think it is a geological occurrence, not a fossil.  Good eye to notice that this stands out from the usual material in the rip-rap.  Next time that good eye will lead you to a fossil.

Thanks! Of course I will keep looking. It reminded me of some of those Mason Creek, Ill. concretions with fossils.

What is the size of the item?

Not really seeing anything fossil-ish in this, however.

sorry, the size is about 3 and 3/4 inches long, and 3 inches by 2 and a half inches for the oval cross section.
