Ohiowright
Hi- we are new to this forum and have great interest in finding out what we picked up this weekend after Hurricane Dorian on the beach in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. We actually drove from Ohio Friday night to look for sharks teeth and came home with a few (nothing sizely this visit) and this piece of what we believe to be fossilized tusk. caldigger
I think it is a piece of bone and not ivory. I see no growth layering, the shape is wrong and this shot shows the porosity of bone.
Bobby Rico
I have quite a few fossilised ivory samples in my collection and I am also with caldigger it looks more like bone . Ivory has a more densely layered look to it. Nice bit of bone.
Rockwood
I think something this dense must be a dugong rib. Perhaps with a bivalve bore hole on one end.
JarrodB
Fossil bone for sure.
Fossildude19
Welcome to the Forum. The cross section photos tell the tale. There is no evidence of any visible Schreger lines. These would be visibly evident if you had fossil ivory. Here's a LINK to identifying ivory. 1 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." grandpa
Another Texan welcoming you to the forum. You sound like a dedicated fossil hunter. I myself was wanting to go to N. Car. after Dorian, but wanting and doing are two different things. You actually did it - dedicated!
