Kane
This is a work in progress, a kind of "master list" of trilobite species found in Ontario according to the available literature. In some cases, stratigraphy and taxonomic names have been modernized. Correlations are added where it is expected that species found in equivalent strata could be found in Ontario rocks. I have not included trilobites from the Hudson/James Bay area as there are a number of species there that still are in need of formal description. There are also a number of uncertainties that require more literature support before they are included here. I'll update this as more resources come available. FossilDAWG
Nice effort. This list will be useful for anyone wanting to assess how complete their collection of Ontario trilobites is, and what formation to target for particular species. If you want to include the Ottawa area in Ontario, the Carlsbad Formation (which is equivalent to the Georgia Bay) includes Proteus chambliensis in addition to the species in your list. The fauna is quite similar to that found at the LaPrarrie tile yard near Montreal. There is a calymenid found there that I have seen listed as "Gravicalymene undescribed species". I have several calymenids from the Carlsbad but I have to check them to see if they are Flexicalymene, Gravicalymene, or if both genera are present. Don
Kane
Thanks, Don. I've included it in the list, although I can't find much more than a whisper of its mention elsewhere beyond two articles by A.F Foerste in 1916 and 1924 (doesn't seem to have been updated since). I don't have an example of that one, but do have two of the undescribed Gravicalymene from Montreal. I should mention that more than half of these are indeed rare, a good handful or more known only as fragments. I wouldn't want collectors in Ontario to think they will be able to pop open a few rocks and find them all. I did toy with assigning a "rarity scale" of some kind, but would prefer a volumetric analysis -- and that would very much depend on having access to a significant source of rock for all these formations for a viable sample, some of which do not outcrop in a significant way or access is highly restricted. Looking over my own collection, I consider myself somewhat lucky to have about 24 of the 132 distinct species on that list, with more in the Devonian due to proximity and circumstance. DPS Ammonite
Kane, are you adding to your list well documented finds of trilobites by TFF members and others that have not been mentioned in the literature? I would be surprised if you did not find any.

Confirmation from the peer reviewed literature is the gold standard in order to ensure the reliable legitimacy of the list. There may be an occasion to add such entries, but with a qualifying asterisk to say that it has yet to be officially confirmed.
Malcolmt
Awesome list Kane... now the natural extention of this list will be for you to acquire one of each..... say goodbye to your paycheck for the foreseeable future

Kane
This list will be updated shortly, onboarding some revisions and providing a species count by formation/age. It will also be sortable in a .doc format, but not so in .pdf format. I am just in the process of compiling the northern Ontario trilobite fauna, which will be set apart from the southern faunal list (northern = anything north of Manitoulin Island, and under a different stratigraphic nomenclature). Kane
Current draft. I am just waiting on some other leads to complete the northern lists. UPDATE Feb 22: quick fixes, and a few more northern Silurian entries. TriloMasterOnt.pdf
Malcolmt
Awesome job Kane....darn someone beat me to downloading it.......... Wondering did you talk with Bill directly when compiling this
Kane
Thanks, Malcolm. I'm hoping to improve upon the northern faunal list as there are some "mislabels" (for instance, Vogel's "Dalmanites" would not appear in the Devonian, and is likely an Anchiopsis given the close correlation with Bois Blanc Fm fauna). I did talk with Bill over the last few months. He had some Devonian fragments to show me that he was unsure about.
piranha
Swisher et al. 2015 classified the following species from Ontario with a subgeneric rank: Bathyurus (Raymondites) bandifer, ingalli, longispinus, trispinosus. They also report B. (R.) clochensis and B. (R.) spinger from Ontario. More recently, Boyce 2020 classified them with the distinct generic rank of Raymondites. The concept and application of subgenera/subspecies always seems to be an exercise in confusion and hairsplitting. A Raymondites by any other name... Kane
Aye, thanks Scott! I was hesitant to emplace the subgenus, and it is really a kind of bizarre, frustrating situation! A Raymondites by any other name indeed!
