ESCONI Braceville Shaft Mine Trip- Day 2 (9-15-19)

Today was the 2nd day of the ESCONI Braceville Shaft Mine Trip to collect Mazon Creek concretions. I was not able to go yesterday since I did not arrive back from Puerto Rico until later that night. I did want to make it out today because I had a number of buckets of fossils (Mazon Creek flora and fauna, Indiana and Kentucky Ordovician has plates and loose horn Coral / bryozoan, Moroccan echinoids and Pleistocene/Pliocene shells) to dump out for the participants.

I was not sure that the trip was going to go on due to rain, but I did receive a PM from @stats Rich advising me that it was on. I had contacted him before I left for vacation and advised him that I had some buckets that I wanted to dump. Rich and others also had fossils that were dumped yesterday and today.

Even though there was quite a bit of rain in the morning, there were a number of ESCONI members who showed up for some fun in the mud, and it was muddy today. I did not stay to do any collecting due to the fact that my wife wanted me to go grocery shopping- lol.

If you live in the area you should join ESCONI, you would love going on this trip that is held on two different weekends during the year.

Here are a couple pictures that I took while I was at the site.

The muddy walk in-

And I certainly hope you were curtious enough to individually label each and every one with all the proper information.

Yea- that’s not going to happen, but I did try to identify pieces for people as they were picking through the stuff.

Thanks for the post, Ralph. I only went on Saturday this time, I notice a lot more rain gear on Sunday. It was hot on Saturday with no clouds. It's always a great trip, though. Some of the friendliest people you could meet, and I really appreciate the buckets you and others bring - I always have a look!

I signed up for Sunday, but had to cancel due to some family plans. Looks like I missed a muddy good time indeed!

I know my kids appreciate the bucket dumps. The one year we went it had rained all night and the kids kept losing their shoes on that walk in and out. I had to carry one out and go back for the fossils. I'm sad I didn't get to go to any this year or last due to work. I almost called in to go, but ultimately decided against hosing my coworkers

It really was a muddy, wet day, but my grandsons had a ball (2nd time going there). I really appreciated the time y'all took to trudge out there with concretions & other fossils. That gives the kids hours of exploratory reading & lots of treasures for "show & tell" at school. This is the best group!

Indeed they did, + so did I. I think, tho, they found more rocks than concretions.

LOL on that.
