I dug this directly from the so-called “red bed” (making it Permian) in the north sulphur river. I thought it might be petrified wood, but I am confused as to what the piece is embedded in it. Any ideas?

The "Red Zone" is still part of the Ozan Formation. Most definitely NOT Permian. It is Cretaceous.

If I were to hazard a guess, this looks like vertebrate material to me, probably from a fish, possibly jawbone.

It is a mosasaur tooth socket.

I was just about to say that doesn't look like wood to me and the area around it isn't too "woody" either.

Mark.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!
