This week I found this in the Reno, Nevada area.  I'm trying to get some information on what it is exactly and if it is indeed a fossil.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to TFF from Austria!

Nice and intriguing specimen, thanks for posting!

I know nothing about your area, just my thoughts (I could be totally wrong, though):

- It looks like a root network that has been grown in a crack in a rock. Maybe the growth of the roots itself have helped creating the crack.

- During or somewhat later of the root growth, the roots were covered by a mineral deposit, perhaps calcium carbonate (calcite or aragonite). Does the white material fizz with vinegar?

- Later on, the roots have rotten away, leaving some nice holes.

- If these structures are older then 10.000 years, it could be classified as a fossil.
