Trilobite ID

Recommended Posts

I was given this Trilobite as a gift from a friend of mine
He went past the same shop where I got my first fossils from (almost a year ago! ), saw a few bits in the window, went in and got me this

Was told it is from Morocco, but no further info.

I have had a look through my book, and think it's a Flexicalymene

Can anyone confirm?

Flexicalymene ouzregui. These are by far one of the most numerous species found, usually from nodules.

Thanks for the ID.

Aside from the first few Trilos that I started this obsession with, I haven't added any more to my collection.

I guess if it is numerous, and therefore cheap, that's why he bought this one.  Anyway, I was grateful that he made the effort on my behalf.

The affordability of this species makes it quite good for collectors getting into trilobites, not to mention it is of a decent size to better appreciate the details. To give credit to this example, it is not composited; a good number of them are found in pieces and cemented together (sometimes not using the parts of the same individual!).

Ditto on Kane's remarks. The condition is very good compared to the vast majority seen for sale,  giving it a bit of rarity even though it is a very common fossil.

Your friend did well.

Apparently there were a few of these available.

I may go have a look myself this coming weekend.

Really shouldn't. As I say, haven't made Trilobites one of my focal points for collection

But if there are some decent specimens it will be worth while???

Somebody talk me out of it..........:default_rofl:

If the rest are as nice as that and the price is not outrageous I would snatch up the rest in a heartbeat. (Your mileage may vary) I'm guessing your friend wouldn't spend more than a pints-worth of beer for it, so . . .

I asked him how much he paid for it. Said was £8. $10 approx.

Might be able to leave work a bit early today and may go past.

Otherwise will be on the weekend.

So I went back to the shop yesterday. They had a lot of nice stuff.

They had about 5 or 6 of the Flexicalymene that my friend got me was definately the nicest of the batch.

A few of them had bumps and chips. And were a bit smaller.

I got these two:

Also got a fern nodule. Will start another thread for that one.

Quite nice. I approve. Of course, anything I say or think is of no consequence, but I approve anyway. I'm liking them.:D
