RetiredLawyer
Found this interesting shell today. Seems to be sandstone. Thought it was a walnut shell at first. Can anyone ID?
DPS Ammonite
It is a brachiopod. Any idea of the formation and age of the rocks that it came from? 1 My goal is to leave no stone or fossil unturned. RetiredLawyer
I don’t really know. I found it about half mile from the Chirotherium footprints I found earlier, which is probably part of the Chinle Formation, but up one mesa level. It’s about 100-200 feet higher up. There is a big expanse of sandstone on that level. In the picture it was on top of the part that juts out left of the foreground tree on the right. I would have to contact a geologist for more info. Thanks for the ID!
DPS Ammonite
Take a look at the Arizona geology maps. Since they look like Paleozoic brachiopods, the Permian Kaibab Limestone seems like the most logical source. If there is no Kaibab in the area, streams could have brought them there. 1 My goal is to leave no stone or fossil unturned. RetiredLawyer
Interesting if it is Permian and the Chiro is Triassic. Kinda bridges the extinction in my backyard.
