Driving from Vegas to Albuquerque: Fossil Sidetrips?

Recommended Posts

hamman88

I'm spending 9 days exploring a wide corridor between Vegas and Albuquerque.  One fossil I'll certainly never be able to find in Florida and have always liked are ammonites.  Are there any recommended legal areas to hunt for these in the area?  What tools should I bring? I have a rock hammer.

While I have found a few ammos in NM, since I was a guest, the site info is not mine to give away.  I can say however that there were some very long desert hikes involved, which felt longer on the return leg since many ammonites are encased in heavy concretions.  We visited no spots where we could drive right up to abundant ammonites, but I like to earn my treasures while visiting new areas, so it was a great trip.

Head to The Windmill Site...that'll get you into Ammonite country. :ammonite01:
