Derek just put up our Christmas tree this afternoon, and the kids decorated it - here's what it looks like:

As you can see, there's already one gift under the tree - the fossil gift that Viola received from her Secret Santa!!!  Notice that it's still unopened - Viola is going to be patient and wait until Christmas Eve to open it :dinothumb:

And this afternoon our Northern cardinal couple visited our backyard (probably ahead of the snow-and-ice storm that's supposed to arrive early tomorrow morning and last until Monday morning) - here's a photo of the male cardinal:

Isn't he lovely???!!!

I like your tree, Monica. But I love the Cardinal even more. We have some that live around our house too. They are my favorite songbirds. I like the fact that they stay all year around. They are very beautiful and i like listening to them call each other.

Me, too, Dave.  I especially like hearing their little "Chik!  Chik!" which usually tells me that they're feeding at our homemade bird feeder.

Despite the terrible weather today, the cardinal pair came to visit us:

Here's the male enjoying a meal on us:

Here's the female resting on a tree in our backyard:

I think they may be my favourite birds :wub::wub:

In the summer, they do a certain call that I like to mimic when we are sitting in the backyard. I think it is a call only done by the male. When I hear it, I try to spot where he is and then I copy it.(Atleast, the best i can) A few times he has flown in for a closer look, either out of curiosity or annoyance. I have never been a birdwatcher per se, but I have always enjoyed their presence. It is nice when you spot rare species. Here in Central New York, we have had a resurgence of Bald Eagles. I dont know exactly when it started but they started appearing a while ago and now are spreading out around the state. It is really a majestic bird. A few years ago I was coming home from work and spotted a Snowy Owl perched atop a streetlight. That was a huge surprise and I was glad to have an opportunity to see it. Shortly after I read a news story about the Snowy Owls showing up at our local airport every winter. Owls are another favorite of mine.

I love the bright colos of the cardinal, thank you Mike to show us their variety.

In Europe, the only Cardinals we have are at Rome.:P

My favourites are raptors.

Here we Don't have snow owls, but we have the magnifical barn owl. The french name Chouette effraie doesn't give it justice because it means frighting owl.

We also have the so cute little owl Athene noctua

And our local star, because its only established population in France is in my department, the Elanus Caeruleus

This afternoon Santa left a very pretty package from Edmonton, Canada on my doorstep.

Since my wife has not wrapped any gifts, your package is the first under the tree.

Our Secret Santa package arrived and it came with a direction to NOT save until Christmas. After I opened it, I understood why. @I_gotta_rock sent us an Advent Calendar with a different fossil for each day.

I will post pictures as we go. What a thoughtful and lovely gift !

Day 1- a beautiful piece of petrified wood from Delaware.

Day 2- a Lemon Shark tooth from Virginia
