Weird shape on a rock

Before we crack this open - I wanted everyone’s opinion on this rock we found. Located off the Catawba River in Rock Hill, SC in a dried up creek.

Looks like a chert nodule to me.

Hi, and welcome to the forum from Illinois. 

 

I agree with chert nodule as most likely judging by the photo, but it would help to see the other five sides of it before you crack it open, just to be on the safe side.

Give it a whack and see what's inside. Wear eye protection when you crack it. We want you to still be able to see it when you're done.
