Ichthyosaur Jaw

Welsh Wizard

Recommended Posts

Hi

just putting this in as a placeholder.

Found today at Penarth, South Wales, UK. An ichthyosaur jaw with some other bones. It’s in a shelly limestone which is hard to prep but fingers crossed.

I’ve reduced the size of the picture as refreshing and leaving the website isn’t working (when it normally does)

you can see the bones better in this picture. There’s a big bone to the left of my shoe lace and the jaw runs at about 340 degrees and is lighter coloured.

Oh well. You win some you lose some.

Looks like it’s just a broken partial lower jaw and a worn quadrate bone. No other bones there.

Its gone on the discard pile

Discard it my way.... We would love to see a photo of what you call a Discard.

Ha. It’s a tough matrix both in terms of prep and preservation. It’s really down to the luck of the draw.

I’ll do you a photo this weekend if that’s OK.

Haha.

My discard pile is pretty small as most of it goes to the local tip or school.

Not me, that looks like a major time waste. :default_faint:

It’s the luck of the draw. You can get some nice bones but prep can be painful.

Not sure if I’ll do any more apart from cut block to size and tidy up. Back of the jaw. Lower Jurassic, Hettangian, ichthyosaur.

A bit more progress. Pyritic in places but there’s more bone than I thought. Length of jaw bone is 200 mm.

Hi Paul. Thanks. You may be right. I’ll take a look at some examples.
