So by the James river in Galena Missouri I walked this trail along the riverside and come across an old dried up creek, so I walked up the dry creek to find one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen in person, it looks like it took millions of years for nature to make this place, everywhere the creek makes a turn their is a giant overhang carved out of the side of the stone bluffs.....anyway I found this there and was extremely amazed and have to share it with yall, anyway I think it's a fossil.

Oh yeah I forgot the measuring tape but it's about an inch long.

Looks like a cross section of some sort of shell, to me.

Looks like it is preserved in chert. Neat looking, whatever it is.

Can we get a few more detailed pictures up closer?

Also, please add a ruler or tape measure this time.

Is the "fossil" one inch, or the stone itself?

Really looks like chert, could a modern fish just get dessicated and stuck on there? Hence the silvery skin. Otherwise that is amazing soft tissue preservation!

Looks like it came straight out of a sardine can. If it is rock it's either fantastic, or a fantastic simulation.

It really looks like it is in the rock but it also really looks too good to be true..some slightly sharper images would help.

Alright so I got a little thing like a jeweler uses to zoom in on it and It does look like a fish that died recently and went back to the place after a good rain and their was a stream of water about 100 yards or so long, it dries up about 20 or so yards before it reaches the river so I'm sure a fish probably swam up the creek awhile back when we had alot of rain......ill add some pics though and see what y'all think.

1 hour ago, Rockwood said:

Have you tried soaking it in water ? Seems as if that would separate the fish from the fossil.

That would work, or just sniff it:default_faint:

This looks like a legitimate fish fossil to me.  I think you need to take this to someone in your area that is knowledge about local fossils and have them look at it.  This might be something very special!
