Work on Hell Creek Display Begins

It has taken 10 and a half months but I can finally start putting together our large display of the Hell Creek Fauna. I am really quite excited to start putting it together. We have a pretty good cross section of critters and I think it will be an excellent display to show the diversity of the formation. I also think this will be a great display to use as we explain how different animals share an ecosystem which is a science standard we want to get into more with the 2nd and 3rd grade students.

I delayed starting this until we had tracked won three key fossils we were missing, Leptoceratops, Pachycephalosaurus, and Denversaurus. Those three have all gotten crossed off the list in the last month or so with the final domino being Denversaurus. We are still missing a Pectinodon tooth but we can add that down the road. I think now is the time to put it together so we can use this display for our presentation in Paradise which comes shortly after the year anniversary of the Camp Fire which burned the city down. It is a special program at the newly rebuild elementary school :)

I will add some pictures of all the fossils in their individual displays later and once it is all living in one display. I am really proud of this one and I want to give a huge thanks to @Troodon who helped us immensely with this formation.

Here is the Denversaurus tooth that I just picked up. A pretty nice tooth and a decent price at that. Today has been a good day for us as this is the one we needed to finish this up right !

It is going to be a lot of fun taking all of these fossils and making a cohesive display.

We will have T-Rex, Nano, Acheropraptor, Dakotaraptor, Richardoestesia, Avisaurus, Triceratops, Leptoceratops, Edmontosaurus, Thescelosaurus, Denversaurus, Struthiomimus, and Pachycephalosaurus representing Dino’s plus shark, batoid, croc, turtle and mammal fossils.

Nice collection, congratulations. Hell Creek name invokes, combined with  it’s striking landscape pictures of some real monsters. I remember as a kid seeing a black white picture of Barnum Brown aka Mr Bones at Hell Creek hunting for T.rex and though this was a cool life to have. I have a small and probably one of my favourite collections alongside my ammonites is my Hell Creek Collection. It is not as nice as yours but it is pretty cool. I would really like  to add some plant seeds and mammals teeth to  maybe when I get back to work . Your display is looking great.

All the best Bobby

Thank you Bobby. We are pretty happy with the Hell Creek collection. We will have a few bones for the kids to handle in addition to the display. I am pretty excited. There is something about this fauna that does inspire the imagination. My hope is this will be a good representation of last non-avian dinos. There is a guy in the UK that has some pretty nice and affordable HC mammal teeth. If I pick up an extra I will send it your way :)

Well, you certainly are off to a good start. :look:

Thank you. I think we have done pretty well given we just started collecting dino fossils about 10-11 months ago and we have a thin budget

Our Hell Creek hot streak continues. We have been on a roll lately and the timing is just superb for us as we are gearing to put together this display. I saw this tooth, formerly assigned to Zapsalis, and I had to grab it. It was labeled as Paronychodon but that was incorrect. Thanks to the paper @Troodon posted about discoveries made from a Saurornitholestes skull from Dinosaur Park, it is not a big leap to assume that these teeth would also be the P2 teeth of similar Dromaeosaurids found in other formations. I am going to put this 5/16" beauty in the Acheroraptor part of the display and we will talk about the theorized use.

The HC hot streak continues. We picked up a really nice Ankylosaurus magniventris tooth. This had been on our list for awhile and the timing worked out this time. It was also a good bargain which we always like.

We also got a 7"x5" Triceratops vert (not pictured). This was another bargain and gives us a good sized touch fossil. I think it will get a lot of use.

Nice little tooth to your collection :thumbsu:

Have many species left to add for your Hell Creek display?

Pectinodon is next. I would love to find one but down the road. Troodontid stuff isn’t cheap so I can wait.

Beyond that, Anzu would be the only other dinosaur to add I think but I’m not holding my breath. It will be quite sometime before I pursue one.

Have you considered adding more to your Hell Creek collection beyond dinosaurs?  Ecologically speaking, that could be very interesting to have examples of all creatures in the area and how they interacted with one another.

We have a few fossils representing other Hell Creek critters and we plan on incorporating those (croc, turtle, shark, batoid, and mammal). We cover as much as we can in the Dino presentations and we do include other critters as time allows.

  • 1 month later...

No labels but this is what the Hell Creek display looks like all put together.

The only thing missing are two claws that will be arriving after Christmas and a Pectinodon tooth. I am hoping we can track one down soon.

Once we have the claws and labels, this will be a nice looking display that will help kids understand the ecology of Hell Creek.

Richardoestesia, Acheroraptor, Dakotaraptor, T. rex, Nano, Avisaurus

Dromae vert, Oviraptorosaurid toe, Struthiomimus toe, Thescelosaurus toe, Edmontosaurus jaw

Pachy, Thescelosaurus, Denversaurus, Ankylosaurus, Edmontosaurus, Trike, Leptoceratops, Trike frill

Croc teeth, Mammal tooth, Myledaphus vert and tooth.
