Ruger9a
Does anyone know what this creature is or is it a plant? It has stumped me for quite some time. Background - It's an old acquisition from Thornton Quarry in Thornton, Illinois. Silurian period. It measures approximately 5" x 3.5". Edited October 29, 2019 by Ruger9a add measurements 5cm x 2.2cm
Fossildude19
Looks like the imprint of rugose, or "horn" coral. FossilDAWG
Definitely it is a solitary rugose coral, as Tim said. Interesting thing about photos, Tim sees an impression but I see a +ve. Hard to be sure without knowing where the light is coming from. Don

Ruger9a
Tim & Don, Thanks guys. I checked out the link and sure enough that's what it is! Finally an identification, thanks you experts. Don, it is definitely an impression. The light is coming from a lamp on the left side of the fossil. It was part of a limestone reef according to the seller. I tried to post three photos, but was not allowed to.
