Old box of shark tooth “fossils”

Recommended Posts

I recently found a small box of shark teeth that I obtained when I was a kid. It turns out that the labels, when translated from Spanish described the features of the fossils and not the actual species. Quite a number were not even true fossils they were mislabeled recently extinct species. Moral of this story: kids are dumb, and don’t buy fossils unless their labeled with the Latin name.

:look: Still can't see them.

They are quite small and may not be what I thought they are... Keep in mind i’m rubbish at identifying.

Yup, real fossils.

The top one is a part of a ray tooth, the others are shark's teeth.

Somebody will be along to tell you the species soon, I hope.

A ray tooth? I thought rays had crushing plates not true teeth?

And those plates are composed of these individual teeth that form the pavement of those crushing plates. The smooth surface is the occlusal (crushing) side and the ribbed side with the comb-like projections is the root.

An example (from Wikipedia):

Wow I am an idiot.

Nope. I learned something new too. If we all knew everything there is to know, this forum wouldn't exist. But the collective knowledge of all the members is AMAZING! Every member, including you, adds something to the whole.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!
