North Canterbury river hunt (New Zealand)

Recommended Posts

I braved the 30 degree Celsius heat to check out one of my local rivers, the Waipara, last weekend. I've had good luck there before with finding whale vertebrae and was lucky enough to find another one this time which makes 3 from a 1km stretch of river. I also managed to find the usual oyster shells and even a nice bit of petrified wood.

Here is a video of the hunt:

Nice video! Just exactly the kind of collecting I love most. Your bone looks to me to be a section of baleen whale jaw. I'm not seeing a vertebra there. Well done! That would've made my day, too.

Nice finds and video!

At least you were by the river in the heat :thumbsu:

Thats what I was thinking too about the bone @Carl. I initially thought rostrum (upper “jaw”) but maybe mandible or lower jaw.

@Boesse will know.

Baleen whale skull for reference:

Thanks @Carl and @Doctor Mud yeah, a piece of jaw makes way more sense! The shape isn't good for a vertebrae :) I need to find where the rest of that skull is hiding.
