Piece of what I believe is reptile rib bone from Big Brook, NJ. Bone fibers are very dense - any chance it could be dinosaur?
TRexEliot replied to TRexEliot's topic in Fossil ID
@shark57 That was my first thought as well. A paleontologist that I emailed suggested rib, but the contour lines felt a bit more limb-like to me initially. -
Hello, so I found this while at work on a rubber roof in iowa. For those who don't know, low slope rubber roofs are often secured to the building by placing a heavy layer of rock over all the rubber weighing it down allowing a roof system to be installed without the need of many gallons of glue to adhere it. I'm lucky enough to be in Iowa where the rock we use can contain Lake Superior Agates and various other fossils and neat stuff the earth has produced. I've taken thousands of rocks home over a nearly 20yr career installing roofs. Mostly Lakers but also some unique things I haven't been able to identify. The thing in the picture is one of them. It looks like it was possibly carved by a person as the lines and divots seem deliberate in my opinion however I know nature does pretty wild things especially when given hundreds or thousands of years to do so. I thought maybe it could be some type of ancient currency but really I have know idea. No theories I'm confident in anyways. I was hoping someone here had seen something similar and could give me some info on what it is or possibly could be. Maybe it's nothing interesting or maybe it's something really great but either way I've been itching to find out for several years now. Any help or info would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, mosasaur vert ... but it does not look like anything I have seen from South Dakota. That doesn't mean it isn't from there, it just looks different. I am talking about the rock and the preservation, not the bone.

PLEASE HELP IDENTIFY- Could this be a fossil footprint?
Rockwood replied to Jessclusively's topic in Fossil ID
Tracks are usually at least partly surrounded by disturbed or displaced sediment. I have to agree that this doesn't look like a track. - Today

PLEASE HELP IDENTIFY- Could this be a fossil footprint?
Tidgy's Dad replied to Jessclusively's topic in Fossil ID
It is a rather interesting piece, but I don't believe it to be a footprint. My guess is that this has been caused by differential weathering of the rock layers. -

Piece of what I believe is reptile rib bone from Big Brook, NJ. Bone fibers are very dense - any chance it could be dinosaur?
shark57 replied to TRexEliot's topic in Fossil ID
I'm not sure that is a rib bone. Could be a partial limb bone. -
I put line through what appears to be foramen holes. I also played with some filters to try to get some details pulled out that I’ve seen on other fossils from Calvert Cliffs. Four of these items are extremely alike in shape and size. Maybe we can stretch and say that natural erosion caused them all to take on near identical shapes and sizes, but then we still need a logical reason to what in Mother Nature is going to give them all identical holes. I think without additional pictures it’s easier to dismiss the rock identity rather than dismissing the fossil identity. Hopefully someone calms down and comes back to the forum because I’m now honestly curious if my 99.99% confidence can be wrong.

pachy-pleuro-whatnot-odon started following Dinosaur Vertebra?

The bone is quite a jumble. But no doubt about it, this is indeed a mosasaur vertebra - and quite a decent sized one at that! Could be a lumbar to judge by shape and length...

PLEASE HELP IDENTIFY- Could this be a fossil footprint?
Jessclusively replied to Jessclusively's topic in Fossil ID
Oh & please note, that this is the very 1st time I've ever attempted a footprint cast so please forgive me on how bad of a job I did. If need be, I can make another 1 as soon as I am able to make it to the store to get more plaster of paris.. fortunately, you learn quickly, what not to do when making a cast lol thanks again all... -

My main interest is fossil fish, but here in this album, you will only find invertebrates: Fossils from Solnhofen, Messel, Holzmaden, Liaoning, Bundenbach, Green River, Linton, Mazon Creek, Monte Bolca, Fiume Marecchia... Have fun!

That looks like a seed but I don't think it is fossilized. I know nothing about tropical plants.
