Fossil or not?

My grandad found this in central Montana years ago and never knew what it was. It holds very special value to me and I just want help in identifying what it actually is. Seems to be more than a really cool rock. Please help!

I agree, this looks like a particularly robust and polished ironstone concretion. I wonder if it sat out on the surface and picked up a polish from abrasion of particles moving in the air.
