Danielb
Hi I’m going up to Nebraska soon and was wondering where you can go and hunt for Pleistocene fossils near lake mcconaughy, or if lake mcconaughy has any fossils? Thanks -Daniel
Danielb
Does anyone know if there are arrowheads around there too? Edited August 1 by Danielb
jpc
McConaughy is Miocene, but my guess is that it is not allowed to collect fossils on the shore as it is likely property of the US Dept of Reclamation. But there are lots of farmland outcrops (i.e., not on the lakeshore) in the area. Maybe ask some ranchers for permission.

Besides lake McConaughy do you know anywhere to fossil hunt within an hour of the lake?

LabRatKing
Can't collect vertebrate fossils on state land in Nebraska without clearance from the NDOT paleontologist. Invertebrate fossils are surface collection only. Artifacts are strictly off limits on all public lands in Nebraska. Not much around the lake due to all the "improvements" made to the area when the lake was built. Much of, if not all the land immediately around the impoundments is Army Corps of Engineers jurisdiction which means no collecting of any fossils or artifacts. Is a why I drive so many miles to fossil hunt and bribe...I mean make friends with...private land owners. Edited August 2 by LabRatKing 1
