Steph67
Hi, A few yeras ago I found that in muschelkalk. One paleontologist says it is the rear of a nothosaurus skull... I have some difficulties to see that. Any help would be great ;-) Size : 17cm long
Steph67
No one can help?
Ludwigia
Sorry I can't help you, but maybe you should ask your paleontologist to explain to you what he's seeing. Maybe that would help.
Steph67
Unfortunately i don't have his contact anymore (25 years ago...)
pachy-pleuro-whatnot-odon
The high degree of symmetry in the bone suggests that the bone derives from close to the axial midline, with its flat geometry suggesting something like a pectoral (if not pelvic) girdle element. In fact, the overall shape kind of makes me think of paired plesiosaur coracoids. The problem is, that I doubt this is early plesiosaur, and it doesn't match nothosaur (at least not from what I've been able to find), so I'm a bit at a los as to what this could be. Maybe @rocket or @Pemphix would have an idea?
Steph67
Ok, but this is bone, correct?
Steph67
Here is a skull of nothosaur. In red should it be this part?
rocket
unsure, could you go to prep it? looks a bit like front of a lower jaw or upper skull, but in the condition as it is I am afraid to give a clear answer Nevertheless, looks like a great find! 1

You can tell from the fibrous part on the top left of the first photograph. 2 hours ago, Steph67 said: Here is a skull of nothosaur. In red should it be this part? Indeed, I hadn't even considered this. But flat bone could, indeed, also be part of a skull. In that case, however, more likely to be the ventral side of the lower jaw, seeing as there seems to be something of a medial suture present, but none of the fenestrae or other suture lines you'd expect if this were a part of the cranium of some animal... Steph67
Oh, yes, lower haw/nose... So I suppose if I prepare it, there must be some teeth !
pachy-pleuro-whatnot-odon
If it's indeed the symphysis, then, yes, there might be teeth
Tidgy's Dad
Nice find. Very interested to see the result if you manage to prep it out a bit.
