hemipristis
hello everyone, I came across this, and the price is fair. Thought it would make a nice office conversation piece. Of course the question is whether it's real or Memorex---sorry, dating myself there, lol---not. I don't see anything glaring, but this isn't my forte. So, thoughts: From Morocco or Made in Morocco? I appreciate any thoughts or recommendations
North
To my eyes, it seems like genuine piece.
Tidgy's Dad
It becomes increasingly more difficult with these. Many are still obvious mass produced fakes but the Moroccans are getting very good at making very good ones. The matrix of the phosphate deposits at Khouribga is easily replicated with sand, glue and a few shell fragments or even by grinding up real pieces of the matrix and then gluing the genuine sand and shell fragments around the fossil. That said, this looks genuine to me, though I am a little doubtful about the two pieces being genuine but not from the same specimen and just fixed together with the fake matrix.
RJB
What Tidgy said, and very well explained. Its obvious that the two pieces are from different animals but both pieces look real RB

True. Very possible.
TyBoy
Real jaws & teeth composited on a matrix bed. Do the teeth all belong to same species? @pachy-pleuro-whatnot-odon @Praefectus

Some enamel ornamentation on them, but still within the range of variation for that species. The teeth and jaw bone have been glued in place on fake matrix. None of the teeth are associated (they are different morphologies, different colors, and probably from different parts of the jaw). I'd recommend passing on this piece. 2

I fully agree with Trevor on this. Fake matrix with two pieces of jaw bone stuck on there, one with two roots and one with one (the middle root of the left-most jaw is also an addition, although the tooth of that one may possibly belong to the root). None of the teeth are associated, though all of them belong to Thalassotitan atrox.
