Hello everyone

My name is Ivy and I am 8. My dad is with me and he is helping me to ask for your help in identifying some curious fossils we found. We think this fossil might have been a tree trunk with something growing around it. What do you think?

thank you in advance

Hi, Ivy!  I'm not seeing any of the characteristics I would expect to see with petrified wood, but we'll see what other members think.

Can we ask what other fossils you have found in the area where this was found?

Hello Ivy and welcome to the forum.  Good eye to recognize the shape and pick this specimen up.

To my eye, this appears to be a pseudo-fossil, or simply put, a great imitation of a real fossil but, in this case, a look-alike and not an actual fossil.  But keep looking!  Patience and effort will be rewarded in time.

Well we collected some other interesting things. Like petrified wood, and items we are still investigating and interesting colored rocks and an eroded brick. I’ll attach some pictures.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Its not easy to say from the pics, but many of the oblong pieces could be so called trace fossils, burrow casts in that case.

Imagine an animal, like a crab for exsample that burrows in the sand. The Burrow gets filled in with mud, and when the sand and mud turn to stone, sometimes the infill turns more stable than the surrounding sand and is later the only thing left when the sand eroded away. There are regions where this kind of fossil can be found in great numbers.

Sometimes one can see where a burrow gets bigger, like the "living room".

Best Regards,

J
