gigaman
Hi All! I once again come to you for expert opinion and input on a Mosasaur skull/ The anatomy is a bit more accurate, but I cannot say for sure if it is a genuine fossil. Any insights would be much appreciated as far as if this is a composite specimen or looks to be from the same extraction (which I doubt) I am mainly curious if the majority looks authentic or somehow synthesized. Also the seller identified this as a Hainosaurus: the slender skull seems accurate but the teeth running to the end of the snout does not align with popular scientific finding/opinions - gives me reason to believe that the fossils may be authentic but a composite of a few specimens. Would love any and all opinions as I am interested to know if there is any authenticity to this specimen. Thanks for any and all input in advance!! Pictures below:
Praefectus
I told that seller to stop calling it Hainosaurus several times. It is a fake skull, highly composited, and made of elements from Eremiasaurus, Mosasaurus, and Thalassotitan. I don't think anything in that skull is Hainosaurus aside from one or two of the teeth and maybe the premaxilla(?) - he needs to remove the glued on teeth for me to tell. ...actually, the surangular is somewhat straight. That might also be Hain (assuming it isn't damaged and glued back together incorrectly). Virtually all the posterior part of the cranium is fake and made of sand. Also, I'm pretty sure one of the dentaries is a maxilla flipped upside down.

Out of curiosity what is the telling sign that the posterior cranium is sand/fraud? What % would confidently say is authentic composite fossil vs fabricated? Thanks again, I am trying to absorb as much as I can on the mosasaur skeletal structure

The sandy texture you see on the top (frontal) is actually sand. Virtually all of the sutures are heavily glued over to make the pieces from different species fit. All of the teeth are placed too. There are real elements in the piece, but it is all held together with fabrication. I'd say about 50% fake, 50% real. Probably not worth the effort to salvage.
gigaman
For further discussion.... are these areas I outlined the specific points that are speculatively filled with sand/glue?
Praefectus
Yes. Those areas are sandy/glue reconstruction.

gigaman
I wanted to add some additional photos for any further input/identification tips for completeness.
Mark Kmiecik
It's poorly done if even I can tell it's composited. Not only do the pieces not fit each other but they are also differrent colors and textures.
