Tapirus augustus (previously Megatapirus) was the biggest tapir to ever live, as the outdated genus name suggests. This species belonged to a lineage of chronospecies that went from Tapirus sanyuanensis to Tapirus sinensis and arrived at Tapirus augustus.
Throughout this lineage, the cingulums (the outermost circle of the molars/premolars became progressively thinner, and the lophs became less and less wrinkled. Size got bigger too.
