I’m excited about this find, not only is it a fossil, form what not totally sure, but I also believe it is a tool! You can see the marks from where it has been carefully cracked. On the flat side of the bone, you can see where it has been flattened as well. If not a tool then certainly harvested bone marrow. This was found in an area close to other Clovis finds.

When I picked up this bone and pieces my thought was bison. Reviewing it I’m not so sure, so will I defer to the experts! I was disappointed though to see this had been run over by an ATV on the sand bar... also sad to see really how polluted our water ways are...

To me this seems to be a toe or foot bone of some sort but from what? Found in an area where bison, mammoth have been found. thanks for looking and any educated guesses!

Hello - found this damaged bone on a rock bar in southern Minnesota. A triangular piece is broke off the the proximal end. However looking at the other end, which seems intact, it does not look like bovid which is what I usually find...

I found this in Dallas County, Texas. I am not sure if it is part of a bison or horse or donkey, etc (equus)..... Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

This was found a few inches above a layer of shark teeth. This was also found in Northeast Texas in a River bank.

I found this large bison hoof core last Friday in SE Texas. The small one is one that I've had for years and seems t be typical of those I've seen on the forum and on the internet. (It's about 3.25", 8.2 cm long). The large one is close to 4", 10 cm. Does anyone know if this could be from bison latifrons? As a note, I and others have found material likely from latifrons in this area. bisonhoffcores2.bmp

I found this on the Yellowstone River after high water, it had washed onto an island on the river and gotten caught in an old tree that was also beached on the island. It is 22" from tip to tip and heavier than I would have expected as if it has begun mineralization. The base of the horn cones are 3 1/8" at their largest dimension. Could this be a Bison Antiquus? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hi TFF, thanks for having me. I frequently find fossils all over the Las Vegas area, but usually things that came from the sea: shells, small organisms, coral. On one of my last outings, I found this horn. I find many Rugosa, coral horns, in the exposed limestone on the peaks around Mt. Charleston area. This example looks very different to me. It is about 8 inches, 20cm long, and is very heavy, like stone and rock. It appears to me that the outer shell "horn" is partially intact, though long turned to rock. The core is a different texture and color as well. It was found on an exposed limestone ridge a mile or two south of Charleston Peak, ~11,000 ft elevation, partially buried in scree. My first thought was it was some sort of tusk from a sea animal, due to other sea fossils in the area. The bison examples I compared it to on the web could be a match to my untrained eye, but none of them to be as "petrified" or stone-like as this one. I thought I'd share, as it seems like a rare find for the area.

My son and I found these yesterday in a few inches of water right next to each other. I would guess they are most likely to be from the same creature. From other posts seen here I would guess bison? Thanks for looking!

Found this guy today. A tooth but from what?my first guess is bison? Second, perhaps a stag moose or other large herbivore. I did find this near some of the bison finds.

Found a tooth walking along the gravel/sandbars of a creek in central Iowa (Des Moines lobe) and came across the tooth on the right. I was surprised to find both these jaws about 1,000 ft apart and a mile downstream. I assumed they were the source, but looks like the loose tooth may be an upper (it's larger) and both these jaws seem to be full. The teeth don't seem to match up symmetrically either, making me think it might be different individuals. Modern and ancient bison remains are pretty commonly found here (the former being extirpated ~100 years ago), but I figure cows are just common enough to confound things. They seem to have the stylids I read about, but I can't tell if they are strong/prominent enough to be Bison. Any help would be appreciated!

These bones were found just above Cretaceous gravel layer at a local DFW creek today. One the leg bones measures almost 17 to 18 inches in length. Leg bone width on this one is around 3 to 4 inches. I also found vertebra bone of bison as well. They look juvenile. These are probably either adult steppe bison bones or juvenile bones. Earlier this month, at a another creek, I also found steppe bison dorsal vertebra with rib bones within similar layer. Your opinion helps.

I found this tooth last week in the Illinois River in NW Arkansas. I’m guessing it’s not terribly old, but I’d like some help narrowing down if at all possible. I think it’s a horse, but not positive. It looks as as if it has been buried in the mud at some point due to the dirt being up in the root. Thank you for any help given.

Can anyone here differentiate a scapula from horse or bison? I’ve seen countless images on line, but I’m still stumped by what I have here.

In tandem with the phytosaur prep, I’ve also started a very challenging bison skull project. This specimen is sub-fossil bone and VERY soft. The bone inside the foils wrapping is a crumbling mess. First step was to wrap it in towels and let it dry for a week.

I am hoping to use a solution to consolidate wet bone specimens that I find immersed in mud, water or on sand bars. Speaking of mega fauna bones in general most of them will fall apart in a few days when drying. Wondering if the acetone based Paraloid could be applied to displace moisture and to consolidate the bone or tusks. The tusks are a real problem. Most are lost after being in the environment for a few days. Ideally I would like to apply something to them as I am removing them from the mud.

Hey all! New to the site, found this while kayaking over the weekend in the Santa Fe River, near Rum Springs Park launch, upriver a bit, it was just down from a smaller spring boil, off the side of the main river way. Any idea of what it is? At first I was alarmed, then upon closer inspection, realized it probably belonged to an animal. Thanks in advance for the help!

Hello! I recently came back from a trip to the Netherlands, and while beach combing in the North Sea, I found this bone. I've been really curious as to what it may be, and even joined this site in hopes of discovering what it may have belonged too. I believe it's a phalanx bone, possibly of a bison from the pleistocene? That's really just a guess based off of others' pictures, so please, any info you can give would be wonderful! Sorry I don't have a ruler on hand for proper measurements, but it is roughly 8 cm in length and 3 cm in width. I put the lighter there to maybe give an idea of size

I found this eroding from a wall about 8 feet deep at a creek in Austin, Texas. There are many artifacts scattered about suggesting ice age fauna. Thanks

I went back out to see my bison and with some help removed the skull! It is mostly intact too! A few pieces came apart but they are in good condition and can probably be restored. Thanks for looking!
