Greetings! I’ve been trying to identify a little bone found in float at a Miocene exposure in Virginia… self guided research leads me to believe it is a distal phalanx from some creature, but that could be wrong, and I haven’t been able to pin down a match …it could even be reptile? I’d appreciate any pointers or suggestions… And if more pics or details are needed, I’ll supply. Thanks!

location: Calvert county, MD formation: chesapeake group Does anyone know what kind of sponge (I’m assuming that’s what it is) is on this shell? I found this years ago. Can’t remember but this was either a Calvert cliffs state park or brownie beach find. Im just now appreciating the coolness of this little guy.

Found between Plum Point and Parker’s Creek. It is an upper anterior. Isurus retroflexus may be conspecific with Isurus paucus. Not found in situ.

Westmoreland State Park, VA, USA: Unidentified possible vertebrae, rib(?), and shark tooth

Hi all, I had a fairly productive first outing to Westmoreland State Park but I have no idea what any of the fossils I found are. The Chesapeake Group has at least 16 different species of otoliths (from bony fish) that fossilized. I still have at least a thousand otoliths left to sort. So far I only have five different species (I think). I have already searched over a thousand otoliths in material brought back in just four trips to this middle Miocene (Calvert formation) site. Here are pictures of the five. If I find any additional species I will post them. 1. Micromesistius cognatus (a genus of cods) 2. Trisopterus sculptus (a genus of cods) 3. Genyonemus sp. (a croaker) 4. Pogonias sp. (a black drum fish) 5. Sciaenops sp. (a red drum fish)

Hi everyone! My girlfriend and I are going to attempt another trip to Calvert Cliffs next weekend. We would love to find a megalodon tooth or vertebrate fossil. We have hip wader and are thinking about going to the Matoaka Beach Cabins and walking north. We were thinking of going a few feet into the water, where larger material has been sorted, and using a sand scooper. For you seasoned experts out there, does this seem like the way to go? I would love any advice! Thanks, Peter
